Resumen: A partir del concepto de polifonía desarrollado por Bakhtine, estudiamos las modalidades de definición de la mismidad y de la otredad en la novela Asalto al paraíso de Tatiana Lobo, situada en el marco de la conquista de Costa Rica a inicios del siglo XVIII. Dado el contexto, en este artículo, es imperativo considerar las figuraciones de la alteridad entre autóctonos y españoles a partir de la relación dominado/dominante. Dicho esto, el objetivo de este trabajo es demostrar que la autora también reflexiona sobre la construcción identitaria en el plano individual. Partiendo de la noción de “extranjería” evocada por Lobo en una entrevista, mostramos que su literatura, y particularmente Asalto al paraíso, no solo desafía la Historia oficial –como ya ha sido evidenciado por la crítica–, sino que traduce una preocupación más íntima de la autora: la construcción del ser constantemente sometido a la mirada del Otro.

Abstract: Beginning with Bakhtin’s concept of polyphony, we study the patterns involved in the act of defining the self and the act of defining the Other. Even though the context of the conquest of Costa Rica at the beginning of the eighteenth century forces us to take into account representations of alterity between the indigenous and the Spanish, representations fixed within the binary of the oppressor/the oppressed, the objective of this study is to demonstrate, in addition, the ways in which the author also reflects, more extensively, on identity constructs at the level of the individual. Beginning with the idea of “extranjería,” evoked by Lobo in an interview, we show that her literature, and especially Asalto al paraíso, not only challenges Official History, as criticism has already documented, but translates as well a more intimate, private concern of the author: the construction of human beings repeatedly subjected to the gaze of the Other.
