Resumen: Después de recordar las tensiones históricas a las que siempre fue sometida América Central a raíz de su posición geográfica intercontinental, y después de definir también en forma resumida el estatuto antropológico de esta zona ístmica en la base de los movimientos migratorios o civilizacionales inducidos, estudiaremos cómo evolucionó el concepto de “lengua vernácula” refiriéndonos precisamente a la lengua española mestizada tal como se usa hoy en Centroamérica; asimismo estudiaremos cuál fue paralelamente el modo de considerar y tratar este regiolecto centroamericano (concretamente su léxico) en los muchos diccionarios de variaciones idiomáticas publicados desde finales del siglo XIX hasta entrado ya el siglo XXI, es decir, desde los primeros intentos lexicográficos aislados y algo tendenciosos hasta la afirmación global de una identidad lingüística regional propia.

Abstract: After recalling the historical tensions to which Central America has always been subject because of its intercontinental geographical situation and a summary of the anthropological status of this isthmic region defined by migratory or civilizational movements, we will study the evolution of the concept of “vernacular language ”, referring specifically to the mixed Spanish language of today’s Central American countries. We will also study the way in which this regional dialect was considered and treated (especially from a lexicographical point of view) in the many dictionaries of linguistic variations published since the end of the 19th century up to the present day, that is, starting from the first isolated and somewhat tendentious lexicographical attempts until the overall affirmation of a proper regional linguistic identity.
